The humble beginnings of the Group may be traced back to the initial operations of Atlan Industries which commenced operations in 1977. Atlan industries started operations from a tin shed in Ipoh Lane, Jelutong, Penang with an initial paid-up capital of RM2,000, a built-up area of about 37 square metres and a workforce of only 2 employees. As the metal stamping operations of Atlan Industries grew, Binamold was incorporated to take over the operations of the tooling division of Atlan Industries in 1984. With the continued growth in the performance and operations of Atlan Industries and Binamold, the Group further expanded its stamped metal parts manufacturing activities with the introduction of Atlan Engineering in 1989.

Atlan Engineering commenced operations in November 1990 as a joint-venture between Atlan Holdings, and two Japanese companies: Itochu Corporation Ltd and E.Sadoshima & Co Ltd. Atlan Engineering was initially set up at the request of Sony Electronics (M) Sdn Bhd and Sony Corporation-Shibaura Technology Centre, Japan, to supply them with large-sized cosmetic stamped metal parts mainly for audio-visual products. With its strategic business alliances with the Japanese partners, the Group had thus strengthened its reputation in the international markets as a high quality manufacturer of stamped metal parts.

Two of the subsidiaries, namely Atlan Industries Sdn Bhd and Atlan Engineering Sdn Bhd, are ISO 9002 certified.

The Company undertook some rationalisation programmes in 2000 with amongst others, the divestment of Spring Spirit Sdn Bhd, a non-profitable retail subsidiary, and the cessation of Atlan Institute of Technology Sdn Bhd, a non-profitable education arm of the group. With that, the Group concentrate its available resources to improve its precision engineering businesses.

Under a restructuring exercise in 2001, the Atlan Group has proposed to acquire Courseville Holdings Ltd (CVL) and Emas Kerajang Sdn Bhd (EKSB). Through its subsidiaries, CVL owns the Blakes Hotel in UK. EKSB is involved in the retailing and importing of duty free merchandise.

In mid 2002, the SC, MITI and the FIC approved the restructuring exercise of Atlan Group. As a result, the Group has diversified its business activities in three divisions: manufacturing, retail and hospitality.
